The American Heritage Dictionary defines ‘revelry’ as ‘boisterous merrymaking.’ But thanks to event planner Edgardo Zamora, the word has taken on a whole new meaning. Now, because of Zamora’s Los Angeles-based company named Revelry, the word calls to mind the very finest in event planning.
Edgardo Zamora is a bear of a man with a wide and brightly beaming smile. While he began his career as a fashion designer and even worked his way up to having his own line of self-titled clothing, it was event planning and design that would ultimately set Zamora apart and make his name stellar.
Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson and Heidi Klum all turned to Edgardo Zamora when they were looking for someone to help them plan and design their weddings. And why, in such a competitive business, in a place where such celebrities could have any designer they wanted, would they turn to Zamora? “I put a lot of dedication into my work,” he said. “I am very precise about every detail. Details are what make everything a little bit more special and memorable. I try to give every single detail a personal touch. This business is based on word of mouth, so I treat every client the same, give every client the best I have to offer in terms of my skills and abilities, and hopefully that one client’s satisfaction will lead to my getting another ten clients.”
Revelry is a company that Edgardo Zamora began because he was looking for a positive and creative outlet for his ideas. Being a very social person who had developed a certain unique sense of style during his days in the fashion business, he decided that he could design events; he could create wonderful memories for his clients that would live with them for the rest of their lives. But what provided that initial spark of inspiration that lead him to take the leap and create Revelry? “My mother was a fashion model,” said Edgardo. “So fashion and colour and trends and textures have always been something I have been aware of. So when I started thinking in terms larger than just fashion designing, I began to think things like, ‘if I can dress a woman, I can dress a chair or a table setting, or a bar’.”
Besides weddings, Revelry has also made quite a name for itself in terms of designing parties for award shows and movie studio premiere parties. One of the most famous of the Revelry after-parties came during the Grammys a few years back when Zamora decided that he would do something a bit different – not just the usual flower arranging – that would make a much bolder statement. “Instead of spending a fortune on flowers, I decided I would buy green apples instead,” said Zamora. “I decorated a whole wall with nothing but green apples and it became the centerpiece for discussion for the whole evening and ever since then that particular party has become a topic of discussion during Grammy parties. It has become known as ‘the green apple party’.”
As any successful entrepreneur will tell you, the person behind the business is every bit as important as the business itself. “I never turn a client down,” said Zamora. “Even if it is impossible in terms of time, I always find a way to make sure every client is taken care of.” Zamora is a bit humble about it but he is also quite active in raising money for underprivileged children, especially those suffering from AIDS.
And how does Edgardo Zamora, event planner extraordinaire, define living la dolce vita? “That’s easy! Living la dolce vita would be to live in a villa on the Adriatic Coast in Italy with my partner, wake up in the morning and shop for food, then relax with my partner on the beach all day,” said Zamora. “But more realistically, one of my goals is to buy a house in Greece with my partner so I have a place to retire to.”
But knowing Edgardo Zamora and his passion for and brilliance of his work, retiring is not something he’ll be doing anytime soon.
