London — Stephen Webster Exuding rock ‘n’ roll glamour in his jewellery designs
By combining exquisite design with rock ‘n’ roll edge and luxurious jewels, Stephen Webster, London’s leader in jewellery design, is now an acclaimed jewellery designer in Hollywood. In fact, Webster designed Christina Aguilera’s engagement and wedding rings, and as a result, gained her as the face of his Stephen Webster jewellery line. Aguilera has since been appearing in Stephen Webster advertisements and hosting parties for the designer.
It seems that Aguilera is the perfect face for the jewellery company, as she exudes the exact persona that the jewellery presents: old-school Hollywood glamour mixed with an edgy rock ‘n’ roll vibe, all wrapped up in luxurious designs. “Christina is my muse,” says Webster. “She has incredible enthusiasm for my work and has done so much for us as a friend. She is very glamorous and very talented, so it’s easy to design collections with her in mind.”
Webster is not a stranger to celebrities as he has a huge Hollywood fan base including Madonna, Pink, Jay Z, Elton John and many more. Webster loves working with stars. “There is nothing like having an icon tell you they love your work,” he says.
Beyond being inspired by such icons, Webster notes that his inspiration can come from anywhere. “The sea, gems, film noir, tattoos, rose bushes, broken glass, music and fish bones. You never know what will trigger it in the end,” he says. Many of his collections show signs of all of the above, with intricate designs and rare shades, some traced with delicate diamonds, and available in different sizes.
His latest collections, both for men and women, prove that Webster’s calling was in jewellery design. However, he didn’t intend to become a jewellery designer. “I was going to study fashion design, and by chance, I walked into a jewellery design class rather than the fashion design room,” he says. “The flames, noise, chemicals and shiny objects were instantly appealing and much more up my alley than fashion design.”
Now, over 30 years later, he’s still at it, and he shows no sign of getting out in the near future. He does, however, have other aspirations for himself. “If I hadn’t become a jeweller, I would write. I love writing and have kept a diary lately. Someday, I want to have my own newspaper column,” says Webster. In fact, late last year, The Independent, a UK-based newspaper, published several pages from Webster’s diary documenting his American road trip along Route 66.
